Description
A generation that had gone to school on a horse-drawn streetcar now stood under the open sky in a countryside in which nothing remained unchanged but the clouds, and beneath these clouds, in a field of force of destructive torrents and explosions, was the tiny, fragile human body. (1) That is Walter Benjamin, talking about the Russian story teller Leskov. What it puts to the reader, of course, is the collapsing coherence of twentieth century experience; the huge reversals of one lifetime; the isolated animal consciousness that, as Benjamin would well find out, may be part of knowledge, but not of power. An obvious and telling remark from a European Jew in the 1930s.
